UVV driver training is one of the key processes in a vehicle fleet and should not be neglected. In this article, you’ll learn what UVV driver training entails, why it’s important, and what digital alternatives are available. We also offer a handy PDF template for download to help you create your own driver training program.

What is UVV driver training?

The UVV driver training is a legally required safety training program for the vehicle fleet. Since many company vehicles are considered equipment and tools used in the course of business, accident prevention regulations must be followed as part of the vehicle owner’s liability.

This also includes providing regular training to drivers. This training should take place at least once a year and teach employees how to operate the vehicle safely and how to respond in the event of an accident.

Why is UVV driver training important?

Driver training is intended to ensure that all employees are familiar with the vehicles and how to operate them. In addition, the training is designed to ensure that drivers can safely handle potential hazardous situations and are familiar with all applicable traffic laws. In this way, companies can prevent potential accidents involving company vehicles and improve the safety of their employees.

Since UVV driver training is mandatory under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (ArbSchG) and the Industrial Safety Regulation (BetrSichV), employers face severe penalties for noncompliance. According to § 22(1)(26) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (ArbSchG) A person commits an administrative offense if, intentionally or through negligence, he or she acts in violation of § 12, paragraph 1, sentence 2 fails to train an employee, or fails to do so properly, completely, or in a timely manner.

Consequently, in the event of an accident, employees may file claims for damages against the company. Furthermore, under Section 26(2) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (ArbSchG), a fine or a prison sentence may even be imposed if an employee’s life or health is intentionally endangered.

A warning triangle is on the road; in the background, two damaged cars can be seen following an accident. Carano offers driver training with a template in PDF format to help fleets comply with legal requirements and prepare drivers specifically for hazardous situations.
The UVV driver training program covers, among other things, how to respond properly in the event of an accident. This helps employees learn how to react correctly and prevent further damage.

What content should a UVV driver training template include?

To ensure employee safety and avoid penalties, comprehensive UVV driver training is essential. To help you keep track of the wide range of relevant training topics, we recommend using a template for UVV driver training.

However, since the risks and requirements within a fleet, as well as the specific characteristics of company vehicles, vary, fleet managers must always customize such templates to their specific needs. This allows those responsible to ensure that they truly cover all relevant areas.

As a general rule, however, the following points should always be included in the UVV driver training:

  • Traffic Rules: Employees should be informed about the applicable traffic rules and regulations so that they can behave accordingly. These include right-of-way and following-distance rules, parking regulations, speed limits, and traffic signs. Particular attention should be paid to changes in existing rules so that all drivers are up to date.
  • Vehicle Operation: Since the operation of different vehicles can vary significantly, care must be taken to ensure that drivers are instructed on the proper use of all components. This includes both the vehicle’s controls and its safety features. Special consideration must be given here to the operation of electric vehicles, as they have specific operating and safety features.
  • What to Do in the Event of an Accident or Damage: It is important to explain how drivers should respond in the event of an accident or damage. This helps prevent further damage and provides assistance until professional help arrives. Topics such as securing the accident scene and providing first aid should be covered in training to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
  • Safety: Safe driving is important for preventing accidents. To ensure that all employees comply with safety standards, they must be trained on topics such as driving and operating times and load securing.
  • Maintenance and Care: Proper vehicle maintenance can prevent damage and also help prevent accidents. In addition to regular maintenance appointments at the repair shop, drivers should also be able to check certain aspects of the vehicle themselves. This includes, for example, checking tire pressure, the brakes, and the oil level. This helps identify problems early on so they don’t turn into serious safety risks.

What do I need to bear in mind with a UVV driver instruction sample?

Since every fleet has its own specific requirements, drivers must also be trained differently depending on the situation. Different types of vehicles must meet different requirements. Therefore, it is not comprehensive enough to rely on a standard UVV driver training template that merely lists general points.

Creating the training content from scratch can be very time-consuming and pose a major challenge for fleet managers. This significant organizational burden can be avoided by switching to digital UVV driver training.

What are the advantages of digital driver instruction?

Because they are easy to use, e-learning courses offer many advantages over traditional in-person training:

  • Flexibility: Drivers can complete the training content anytime, anywhere; all they need is an internet connection. This allows them to tailor the training process to their individual schedules.
  • Time savings: The ability to conduct training online reduces travel and organizational efforts. In addition, fleet managers do not have to compile the training materials themselves or present them to employees. Thanks to these time savings, they can focus on other tasks related to the fleet.
  • Cost savings: By using digital training methods, employees can easily access training materials online. This reduces costs for materials, printing, and logistics, making it easier to stay within budget.
  • Traceability: The system makes it easy to track every driver training session that has been conducted, providing you with proof of compliance with regulations and guidelines.
